Some Actual...News?

Viktor Kozlov signed with KHL champions (so like, the equivalent of the Panthers) Salavat Yulaev about a month ago, eschewing America's capital for the likes of Ufa in the Republic of Bashkortostan (essentially a state). You may recall, of course you don't, that Salavat Yulaev is the team that poached Alex Radulov, and includes some other former NHL players, like Oleg Tverdosky, Alexander Perezhogin, and...Steve McCarthy? Hey man, whatever.
The real news, because unlike Kozlov, Sergei Federov is actually worth something to the Capitals organization (but perhaps worth even more now that he's definitely coming off the payrolls?). The 39 year old is going to ink a 2 year $3.8 million dollar deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, which obviously is far more than he would've received anywhere in the NHL. The first Russian to reach the 1,000 point plateau, this shoe-in hall of famer is taking his 483 goals and 696 assists and going home.![]() | ![]() |
Actually now that I look at it, I'm not sure that Feds isn't joining a semi-professional roller hockey team in South Carolina, cause seriously, look at those things. Ghastly.
What does this mean for the Capitals however? Losing Feds and Kozlov opens up $6.5 million in cap space for next season, but as a friend pointed out to me, losing Feds and Kozlov also creates a seemingly drastic need when it comes to leadership. Will the Caps use some of that money (let alone Don Brashear's $1.2 million coming off the books) to signing a proven leader in free agency? Off the top of my head here...Saku Koivu? Brendan Morrison? Jere Lehtinen? Matthias Ohlund? Should be interesting to say the least. I'm going to defer to Japers Rink and find out what he thinks.
