Toughest Arenas To Play in This Post Season
But back to Hockey. I may be a little premature, who am I kidding, I'm always premature. WOOO. But, I figured we could take a look at some of the arenas that are going to host playoff games this year, and what places could prove to be the most difficult to win in this post-season.
Playoff standings in the East as of 5pm today:
1 y-Boston
2 y-Washington
3 x-New Jersey
4 Philadelphia
5 x-Carolina
6 Pittsburgh
7 Montreal
8 NY Rangers
-----------------------
9. Florida
10. Buffalo
So which of these teams have the most vicious fans, loudest arena, and best chance of affecting the outcome of a game THIS post-season? Here are my top 3 choices for each conference based on the team AND the fans/building.
#3. The Belle Center - Montreal Canadians
I know they have been on life support for the past few weeks, and I know they won't claim home ice advantage...but as of late the Canadians have turned it around a bit and they are looking more like a playoff caliber team. And I don't care what you say, ANYWHERE in Canada is tough to play. And you can't get much tougher than Montreal...especially during their Centennial season.
#2. RBC Center - Carolina Hurricanes
Wait there's hockey in Carolina? Yah yinz guys probably didn't expect this one...but this place is LOUD AS SHIT.
"This is a loud building, and it would be louder in a must-win playoff game," center Max Talbot said. "It's been a tough place for us to win. It's been tough for everybody."
And I don't know what it is about these guys lately, but they just won't f'n lose. I never want this team in the playoffs because when they are in they always seem to make noise and be a pain in the ass for everyone else. They look exactly like they did when they won the cup post-lockout in 05-06. Carolina is playing the best hockey in the East right now, and have a legit chance of grabbing that 4 seed from Philly. I would NOT want start a series in Carolina.
#1. Wachovia Center - Philadelphia Flyers
I shouldn't have to explain this one. Maybe not the BEST fans in hockey, but definitely the most ruthless, tenacious, and vicious fans in all of hockey. So they were beat 4-1 in a series last year by the Pens...that's a mute point. This team is DIRTY, NASTY, and just downright F'n mean. They are built for playoff hockey. You want to talk tough, you talk Flyers hockey. Their fans are the same way. Cue Vance's "incident" with a disgruntled Flyers fan while mid-pee. I'll go on record saying this, if they get a 2 goal lead on any team at home this post-season...I guarantee you they don't lose.
Now on to the West. Here are the standings for the West as of today:
1 y-San Jose
2 y-Detroit
3 x-Calgary
4 x-Chicago
5 x-Vancouver
6 Columbus
7 Anaheim
8 Nashville

9 St. Louis
10 Minnesota
Ranking these is a bit tougher for me because I don't see as many games from the West but I'm going to take a stab at it. I'm entitled to my own opinion you bastards.
#3 United Center - Chicago Blackhawks
This might be a little bias because I attended the Pens/Blackhawks game this year...but little known fact...Chicago still LOVES their hockey team...and for the first time in 7 years this team is back in the playoffs...and SHOULD have Home Ice advantage. The arena is LOUD, the fans are intelligent and...at least when I was there...respectfully BRUTAL. Couple that with the fact this city has been dying for this team to actually WIN something in the playoffs (cough Cubs cough), and any team is going to have a tough time beating the Blackhawks at home.
#2 Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary Flames
Quite possibly my favorite hockey arena to watch a game of hockey in besides Mellon Arena...and I've never even been there. This place just looks bad ass at all times. That sea of red jerseys? What a spectacle. Again, it's Canada...so you know what you're getting with their fans. And any fanbase that has psychotic people making threat phone calls wanting to shoot and bomb Steve Mason is probably enough conclude they take their playoff hockey seriously. Nuf said.
#1 HP Pavillion (The Shark Tank) - San Jose Sharks
You can't really ignore a 31-4-4 record at home. Yeah I ignored Boston's 28-6-6 record but that's cause I just think their team is sick nasty and adding their fans into it, to me, just doesn't make them THAT much better. The Shark Tank is different. This team just doesn't lose at home. And they definitely have the coolest enterance in the NHL. I wish I could skate out onto the ice through a shark mouth. F'n sweet. I've maaaybe watched 3 games this season that took place at the Shark Tank and I'm not sure I've seen a crowd give more of a momentum boost to a team than in San Jose. Lets see, they've lost 4 games of 39 in regulation at home all season. I'd say that's pretty convincing evidence that this team is the favorite to win the cup.
So there you have it. The top 6 arenas I think will be the toughest to play in this post-season. I'm sure many of you disagree, as well you should, so let the great debate begin via C-blog!

I haven't been around as much as Avery, but I've been to the Avalanche games and I've been to The Belle Center once. And those Candadians fans are frickin' insane! It wasn't even a playoff game and they screamed and yelled non-stop for the whole first period.

But when the Flyers are on their game, there isn't a louder, nastier building in the East. No way, no how. Just ask the NHL players that voted the Philly fans and the Wachovia Center as the most intimidating fans/venue in the entire league.
While a minority of (upper deck) Philly fans perpetuate the drunk belligerent stereotype, Philly fans are the most or at least one of the most knowledgeable fan bases in the US. There is a REASON we boo poor performances and half-ass efforts. Because we know what's going on down on the ice and we know what it takes to win.
Carolina? Really? I've never been to RBC, but good lord they don't even have a city to have a parade in. Is it really that crazy of a venue? Is there a better example of bandwagon fans? How does Cam Ward make the RBC such a crazy venue to play in?
Montreal, I will agree. I had the blessing of seeing one of the last games in the Forum as well as be in Montreal (but not in the Bell) for a Flyers/Habs game. They are nuts up there...
It's slowly becoming a strong interest/hobby of mine to see the Flyers on the road in places like Montreal, NY, Pittsbrgh, Buffalo, Toronto, Calgary, etc. I'd like to visit at least one away venue per season... Can I bookmark this thread until I do?
Believe me Digita, if I have my wish, the Pens will steer clear of the turnpike until absolutely necessary in the ECFs.
Carolina is sort of an oddity. Everyone has this perception that they have this very disloyal fanbase and I find that to be untrue. Carolina loves their hockey, and while we may not see it as a very marketable or even likeable franchise, anytime they are in the post-season...they prove to be very very tough to beat.

Let's take a recent example, I'll use the newest installment in the Yakuza series. Yakuza 3 - an imported Japanese PlayStation game - was recently released in the US. The game was heavily criticized by gamers who suspect the localizerd edited or removed significant game elements.
This gets me wondering: how much of the cut content was actually "inappropriate for American audiences" as in "cultural differences would prevent full understanding and therefore only serve to confuse the player and impede their progress", as opposed to "Americans are generally far more religious and uptight than Japanese people, so we can't show them this kind of nudity and/or violence"? It was certainly a disappointment for gamers who expected to have the same game as the Japanese one after reading reviews and news in video game magazines or forums.
Most of gamers are reasonable adults who just want to enjoy the game as it is, instead of playing an edited, censored version of it. So please, developers, think of gamers first when you are localizing your games.
Video game translation shall always be respectful of gamers.
Because of innumerable reasons that are tied to a certain place, a video game, already released in some places and that looks completely fine in one place can be criticized as unacceptable somewhere else. This is a good reason to thin that localization - contrary to mere translation- is extremely important for video games.

I assume that someone purchasing the third installment in a game series would normally have a pretty good idea as to what kind of content they were getting into, especially with a series such as Yakuza, which is relatively well-known. The games even receive ratings similar to films, giving the consumer an even better idea of what the game in question contains.
Regardless as to what country this game is purchased in, by default (due to content) the player will generally be an adult - or at least old enough to understand that the game may contain some "naughty bits". Just look at the cover - this fact is not going to surprise anyone. So who are the publishers to decide even further who this game is for, and what parts they should be allowed to play?.
Game translation is not censorship and should be adapted to players in a certain territory.
