The New Team to Beat?

Did Calgary just win the arms race? Did the West sit idly by while Calgary scooped up a transition game and grabbed the vaunted #1 Center? Did that just happen? Did that new line: Cammalleri, Jokinen, Iginla really put up 7 points...in the 1st period? Yeah. That. Just. Happened.

Personally, I think the West is 4 teams, and 4 teams only; (in statistical order)
  1. San Jose
  2. Detroit
  3. Calgary
  4. Chicago
Until somebody beats them, this is Detroit's conference to lose. Plain and simple. But will Conklin or Osgood step up and elevate their game? Will they even need to? Answer: Yes. They have the talent to repeat, but they certainly cannot take that for granted.

There's an argument for both Calgary and San Jose for the next contender. You have to like Calgary's new top line, plus with Kipper in goal, you'll always have consistent netminding night in and night out. Their weakness? Right now it's hard to pick out their Achilles Heel, but if I had to, I'd say depth. That is, until Langkow, Renee Bourque, and Bertuzzi get back. Then you'd have to say consistency.

But still there's San Jose, regardless of their recent skid, they still have the parts (and now grit and cup experience to boot) to win this thing. Unfortunately, the Sharks have the reputation of finishing quicker than your Dad, but will Travis Moen bring enough to the table? Is this the year Marleau and Thornton make it happen? That's the question that surrounds the Sharks, and always will, until they prove otherwise, just the way it is.

Chicago? Always the afterthought, always dangerous. We've seen how a team can ride a hot goalie, we've seen a team ride a hot Khabibulin all the way to a Stanley Cup. Personally I don't think they can match up with the big boys, but you never know.

So the question is; who's the favorite now?

I know I ranked Detroit up top there earlier, but you know, right now, I'm going with Calgary.
