Updating the Flyers Cap Situation

Well Briere's stint for the Phantoms will come to an end tonight at around 10. Sometime between then and Wednesday at 7 Paul Holmgren needs to shed $4 million in salary. Good luck Paul.

It looks like Briere is close to 100%, had a goal and an assist in the 7-1 rout the other night, and says he only experience a tweak of pain that didn't hinder his play, cutting, or playmaking abilities.

Holmgren's been trying, now I'm not going to act like I know who he's been on the phone with, but he certainly has a glut of defensemen, with 2 men in the press box each night. Last night was Sbisa and Kukkonen, while Randy Jones and Andrew Alberts were displayed to other teams scouts. Obviously Randy Jones and his 2.75 million cap hit is the easy move, but won't teams want to see him healthy, and performing, to justify taking on such a contract?

Sbisa certainly doesn't deserve to go back to Juniors, he's performed as well as any 18 year old defensemen in the NHL can be expected to, and in the salary cap era, his salary is certainly worth it.

Another option is a trade of one of the semi-overpriced secondary scoring forwards: Upshall, Lupul, or Hartnell. Of course, there is always Mike Knuble (whom as a Sabres fan I have always coveted).

At this point it seems sending Kalinski and Gratton back to the A, and making one trade is the Flyers best bet. Dancing partners? Montreal has had a glut of injuries up front, so has Boston, but will the Flyers be willing to part with a piece to shed salary? Defensively, well one would think the Lightning, but they already swapped once this year, other options? Perhaps the Penguins could use a guy like Randy Jones, but inter-division swaps are so utterly unlikely mid-season. Out West, maybe Columbus in their pursuit of their 1st franchise playoff berth?

It's hard to say, but in Flyer-land there definitely will be some rosters moves made sooner than later, they have to.
