Slumping Pens...Maybe Not.
Not many story lines going into tonight's game that you don't already know. Philly is one of the best teams in the NHL like it or not, and the Pens are playing...and I'm loosely using the word "playing"...like one of the worst teams in the NHL.
In the offseason I was one of those fans saying:
1. The Pens will not miss Ryan Malone.
2. Hossa will hurt, but he didn't get this team to the playoffs last year.
3. Adam Hall and Gary Roberts might actually be the biggest losses.
4. Peace out Conk, you aren't a starter, just a really really good back-up.
Maybe Malone's absence is bigger than we think. Pens fans won't admit that because he took more money and bailed...but that physical presence in front of the net sure would be nice on the PP wouldn't it? And how much do we miss Conklin right now with our below average goaltending. F'n a Cotton. I loved everything about Adam Hall's game. Imagine him and Matt Cooke on a line together...and maybe that "Ooo Roberts is a great leader" bullshit that the Pitt media and players would shove down our throats shouldn't have been taken for granted....We'll never know.
But the question I ask to you readers is this: Is it time we stop calling this a "slump" for the Pens, and maybe start facing the fact that they just aren't a very good hockey team?
I'll admit, I'm very close to facing that reality. And no that is not being a bandwagon fan. I can deal with Pens loss to either a good Flyers team or a good Caps team, but they must get at least a point from the 2 games, and MUST beat the Rags and Ducks. And we've seen the numbers HERE...and HERE. And while their record surely suffers because of those stats and trends, maybe the stats are just pointing to the truth we cannot and do not want to conceive.
All I'm saying Pens fans is we need to stop looking at this team as a Stanley Cup Contender, as an Eastern Conference Champ contender, hell, even as an Atlantic Division Champ contender, those are dreams now, not a reality. They are now merely Playoff Spot contenders....but beyond that...I'm not really sure WHAT this team is but they don't either...and that's a problem, they need an identity.
A team without an identity is like waking up in the morning after you banged some drunk chick you've never met.
We'd like to think the Pens TRUE identity has yet to be seen, but maybe...just maybe...and holy shit I hope not... in this recent "Slump", they have been showing us just who they really are.
No prediction for tonight, Philly still sucks. Hopefully the Pens can squeeze one out ( that's what she said) and the Steelers can hand their asses to them in the Superbowl. Go Pens
